Description
During the workshop, participants will learn about the theory of visual sign language. Through games and exercises using various means of expression – hands, facial expressions, and even the whole body – we will stimulate creativity and discover the possibilities of creating signs that allow us to express ourselves and tell various stories.
The workshop will be led by Visual Vernacular performer Edyta Kozub:
"I am passionate about Polish sign language and have been a teacher for many years, committed to spreading knowledge about the culture of deaf people. Recently, I also became a Polish sign language artist. From my first contact with VV (on the first day of the workshop I attended), I fell in love with this special technique of artistic expression. (...) I really enjoy watching stories being told through gestures, I feel as if I have been drawn into a film, as if it were really happening.
Visual Vernacular can be a way to show people the beauty of Deaf culture. It is a form of theatrical expression that combines elements such as facial expressions, pantomime, gestures, elements of sign language, storytelling, and the poetry of body shape and movement. Using the whole body, hand movements, gestures and facial expressions, you can tell a story that will be understood by both hearing and deaf people.
