He is best known as a Saxophonist, Composer and Educator. He has taken part in numerous world tours and appeared on TV and Radio many times.Known for being a member of psychedelic rock band Spiritualized throughout their heyday from the late 1990’s to the early 2000’s as a soloist and arranger appearing on the albums, “Let it Come Down, Amazing Grace and Live at the Albert Hall.
With Spiritualized he recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the New Orleans legend Dr John, playing and arranging horns for his album Anutha Zone. Spiritualized completed many tours with such notable artists as Radiohead and Neil Young, they even managed to get into the Guinness book of records by performing the Highest gig in the World in a freestanding building (at the time Toronto’s CN Tower)
Before Spiritualized Ray was a member of revered post rock band Moonshake who were signed to the classic London label Too Pure alongside PJ Harvey. After recording groundbreaking albums within what is now known as the Post Rock genre, the band eventually split after numerous tours and dwindling album sales. During this time Ray also appeared on recordings with Cornershop and Stereolab. PJ Harvey recorded with Moonshake as a guest vocalist. With his own band Skree he released two acclaimed underground albums, and with his free jazz band Solar Fire Trio, he released three critically acclaimed albums. With SFT, he toured the UK supporting the legend that is, Julian Cope. Later signed to the label Ninja Tunes, with the band Loka Ray played on and arranged musician the album Passing Place. Now based in Warsaw PL, Ray continues to play live and record with his bands, Light Star Guiding and Casting Lots as well as being a major player in the Polish improvised music scene where he also conceived and conducts both the Warsaw Improvisers Orchestra and the Sound in Space Orchestra. Ray also runs improvised music workshops and teaches classes about the history of free jazz and improvisation. Under the Strefa WolnoSłowa umbrella he is the composer for all of their theatrical performances and installation pieces.
He also continues to record occasionally with more well known artists. Some names he has recorded and performed with ; Sonic Youth, Suicide, Moose, Lush, Stereolab, Durutti Column, AMP, the Duke Spirit, Cornershop, Six By Seven, Damo Suzuki, Thighpaulsandra, Soulsavers – Mark Lanegan, Gallon Drunk, Michael J Sheehey, Dead Skeletons, Mark Gardener (Ride) and Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab). In the improvised music world he has collaborated with Eddie Prevost, a founder member of the legendary AMM, and recorded and played concerts with many improvisers including ; Peter Brotzmann, Satoko Fuji, Augusti Fernandez, Paal Nilssen Love, Philip Marks, Chris Corsano, Brigitte Kuepper, John Butcher, Lol Coxhill, Carlos Zingaro, John Edwards, Martin Kuchen, Jeffrey Morgan and Evan Parker.
