Plant Manifesto  - a performative event combining theatre and movement. Drawing inspiration from the workings of the plant world, we explore themes such as migration, community, boundaries and responsibility for our shared world.

Plants do not recognise hierarchical authority. They form communities based on the relationships between the organisms that make them up. They know that all are essential to the survival of the plant and animal community, because we are one. Plants limit their growth when resources become scarce; they look after future generations. And what about us?

Article 7 of the Plant Manifesto reads: “The Plant Nation recognises no borders. Every living being has the right to move about and to choose where to live.” Article 14 of the Declaration of Human Rights reads: “Everyone has the right to seek and enjoy asylum in another country in the event of persecution.”

This is not enough. It is not enough to have the right to migrate whilst fleeing persecution. Migration is either a necessity or a choice. We should be able to migrate at any time. Animals migrate; plants migrate. Migration is a natural strategy for survival; to block it is to curtail dignity.

Movement is, at the same time, so much more. It is the very essence of life.
