We imagine a manifesto created by plants – write it, dance it, co-create it. Plants do not recognize hierarchical authority, they create communities based on relationships between the constituent organisms, simply because they know that all are important for the survival of the plant-animal community. Plants limit their growth if resources begin to run out, caring for future generations.

Article 7 of the Plant Manifesto reads “The Plant Nation does not recognize borders. Every living being has the right to move, and to choose a place to live.” Article 14 of the Declaration of Human Rights reads “Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.” This is not enough. Having the right to migrate while fleeing persecution is not enough. Migration is a necessity or a choice. We should be able to migrate always. Migration is a natural survival strategy, the blocking of which is a restriction of dignity. At the same time, moving is much more than that. It is the essence of life.

The performative event “Plant Manifesto” is the essence of a workshop work loosely inspired by Stefano Mancuso’s “The Nation of Plants”. It was prepared by an intergenerational and intercultural group of migrant and Polish creatives within the framework of the “Asylum Warsaw 2024” project, the Youth Laboratory for Creative Practices, and by activists from the “Wschód” Initiative and employees and volunteers of the Dunaj Foundation Institute for Dialogue.

Organizers: Strefa WolnoSłowa and Zygmunt Hubner Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw, Plac Zabaw nad Wisłą, BarKa, Dunaj Foundation Institute of Dialogue, “Wschód” Initiative.

A group of young people uses artistic tools from the field of performing arts to tell a story about a topic important to them: the climate catastrophe. Sometimes more literally, sometimes more poetically, but every time it is a compelling story about the ecological crisis they are living through.
The performative show as part of the finale of the Youth Laboratory of Creative Practices was created during monthly weekend meetings held from March to June 2024.
